Iran’s Parliament Welcomes Promotion of Ties with China

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Speaker of Iran’s Parliament Ali Larijani stressed on Saturday that the parliament backs the development of bilateral ties between Tehran and Beijing, including a recent deal based on which China will modernize Iran’s Arak heavy-water nuclear reactor.

“Expansion of ties with China in all fields is of a great importance to Iran, and will lead to deeper relations between the two countries,” Larijani said in a meeting with visiting Chinese President Xi Jinping here in Tehran.

Larijani underlined the need for promotion of economic ties in such fields as oil and gas, railroad, as well as the transfer of modern technologies including nanotechnology, biotechnology, and space technology to Iran.

He also pointed to mutual cooperation between Tehran and Beijing in the field of nuclear power plants, particularly on the Arak heavy-water reactor, adding that the Iranian parliament definitely supports such cooperation.

Xi, for his part, called for the enhancement of mutual political trust between the two states, urging that Iran and China should strongly support one another.

China is willing to play an effective role in Iran’s development, the Chinese president said, urging more constructive interactions between the two sides in such fields as water resources, energy, nuclear power plants, and jointly building the Silk Road Economic Belt.

He also hailed as significant the parliamentary ties between the two countries, saying the Chinese administration backs the expansion of ties between the two parliaments since such relations play a great role in the expansion of bilateral ties.

He also hailed the role Iran’s parliament played in the resolution of Iran’s nuclear case and the implementation of the nuclear deal between Tehran and world powers, and referred to the deal, known as the JCPOA, as a great opportunity for enhanced cooperation.

The Chinese president arrived in the Iranian capital on an official visit on Friday night, and was officially received by Rouhani early on Saturday.
