US Resumes Imports from Iran after 2-Year Hiatus

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The United States of America began importing goods from Iran in December 2015 after more than two years, the statistics released by the US Census Bureau show.

The value of US imports from Iran in December 2015, the month in which Iranian exports to the US resumed after 26 months, stood at $10.8 million.

The breakthrough in Iran-US trade comes with the implementation of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), a lasting nuclear deal between Iran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany).

Under the landmark nuclear deal, the US government has granted permission for the import of some Iranian products, including carpet and saffron.

Iran had exported $2.2 million worth of goods to the US in 2013, while that amount in 2014 and in the first eleven months of 2015 fell to zero.

The JCPOA, which officially came into force on January 16, has terminated all nuclear-related sanctions against Iran.
