Rouhani Sees Georgia as Corridor for Iran’s Trade with Black Sea States

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani called for closer cooperation with Georgia, saying that the East European country can play an influential role in the Islamic Republic’s trade with the Black Sea States.

In a telephone conversation with Georgian Prime Minister Giorgi Kvirikashvili on Monday, President Rouhani welcomed expansion of bilateral relations between Tehran and Tbilisi, saying, “Economic and cultural cooperation between Iran and Georgia should be strengthened more than ever in line with the interests of the two nations.”

He further pointed to the activities of the two countries’ joint economic commission and said there are numerous capacities to boost cooperation and implement agreements of the joint commission.

Rouhani added that lifting of visa requirements for the two sides can promote the level of cooperation between Iran and Georgia.

The Georgian prime minister, for his part, offered his congratulations over the recent implementation of a nuclear deal between Iran and six world powers and the removal of anti-Tehran sanctions, saying that the agreement is not only in the interest of Iran but also the entire region and the world.

The remarks come against the backdrop of a new wave of interest in ties with Iran after Tehran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany) on July 14, 2015 reached a conclusion over the text of a comprehensive 159-page deal on Tehran's nuclear program and implemented it on January 16.

The comprehensive nuclear deal, known as Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) terminated all nuclear-related sanctions imposed on Iran.

Experts believe that Iran's economic growth would rise remarkably after the final nuclear deal takes effect.
