Iranian Diplomat Highlights Tehran’s Emphasis on Truce in Syria

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – A senior Iranian Foreign Ministry official welcomed recent peace plan for Syria, and said Iran has always underlined the importance of the establishment of a ceasefire in the Arab country.

“Since the outset of the crisis in Syria, Iran has always underlined ceasefire in the country,” Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs Hossein Amir Abdollahian said.

The remarks by the Iranian diplomat came as the Syrian Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Tuesday that the government accepts the terms of a Monday ceasefire deal announced by the United States and Russia.

It added that the Syrian government accepts the deal on the basis that military efforts against Daesh Takfiri terrorists and the al-Qaeda-linked al-Nusra Front group continue.

As regards the possibility of the implementation of the deal, the Iranian diplomat said Tehran is confident that the Syrian government would remain committed to the ceasefire.

He at the same time noted that “it is not clear” that armed groups linked to known terrorist groups would observe the ceasefire “because armed groups linked to terrorists benefit from chaos in Syria.”

“Tehran will do its utmost to help fight terrorism, establish lasting ceasefire, facilitate delivery of humanitarian aid and hold all-inclusive talks among Syrians under the supervision of the United Nations.”
