Iran, Britain Ink MoU to Boost Air Transport Cooperation
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – High-ranking aviation officials from Iran and Britain signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to increase the number of direct flights between the two countries, Iran’s Civil Aviation Organization (CAO) announced.
According to the cooperation agreement, Iran and Britain can increase the number of direct passenger flights to 42 per week, Director of Public Relations Department of the CAO Reza Jafarzadeh said.
In the MoU, it was also agreed that cargo flights would be operated without restriction, the official added.
He also said British Airways, the largest airline in Britain which has stopped its flights to Tehran for about six years, is scheduled to resume them on July 14, 2016.
Back in late January, the chief executive of British Airways said the airline is willing to restore direct flights to Tehran following the removal of anti-Iran sanctions.
“We are very interested in flying to Tehran and we are hopeful that it will form part of BA's network in the very near future,” Willie Walsh was quoted by the Telegraph as saying on January 25.
His comments came a few days after the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), a lasting nuclear deal between Iran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany), came into force.
Based on the nuclear deal, reached in July 2015 and enforced on January 16, 2016, all nuclear-related sanctions against Iran were removed.
