Election Campaign Ends in Syria

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Syrian candidates have stopped their political campaigning prior to the upcoming parliamentary elections.

World

With less than 24 hours remaining until Syrians begin casting their votes in the polls, a pre-election silence has been announced in Syria whereby no active campaigning by the candidates is allowed based on the Arab country's constitution, according to Tasnim dispatches.

This, in return, allows a period for voters to reflect on events before going to polls.

All necessary measures have been taken in various parts of the country in preparation for vibrant elections.

There will be about 7,200 polling stations with 14 million eligible voters taking part in the polls. As many as 3, 500 candidates, including women, will compete for a place in the 250-seat parliament.

The polls will be held on April 13 at the usual time as the Syrian government holds such elections every four years.

The last parliamentary elections were held in 2012, just months after the adoption of a new constitution in the crisis-ridden country.

The event will be held amid an ongoing war against terrorism throughout the Arab country, which has been gripped with a catastrophic civil war since 2011.

According to a February report by the Syrian Center for Policy Research, the conflict in Syria has claimed the lives of over 470,000 people in total.
