Iran Hindering Transit of Illicit Drugs to Other Countries: Minister

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran’s Interior Minister Abdolreza Rahmani Fazli said the country’s anti-drug trafficking efforts have hindered traffickers’ attempts to transit narcotics to other parts of the world.

Rahmani Fazli, who doubles as the secretary general of the country's Drug Control Headquarters, held a meeting with his New Zealand counterpart Hon Peter Dunne at the UN headquarters in New York on Tuesday.

During the meeting, the Iranian minister emphasized that the Islamic Republic has been seriously combating drug trafficking over the past decades in efforts to reduce the activities of organized drug-smuggling groups and halt their infiltration into the country.

Therefore, countries benefiting from Iran’s anti-drug trafficking efforts should extend their support for the Islamic Republic and other nations on the frontline of the fight against narcotics trafficking, Rahmani Fazli added.

Donne, for his part, hailed the contributions of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the fight against illicit drugs trafficking.

Iran is on a major transit route for drugs being smuggled from Afghanistan to Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

Despite high economic and human costs, the Islamic Republic has been actively fighting drug trafficking. The war on drug trade originating from Afghanistan has claimed the lives of nearly 4,000 Iranian police officers over the past three decades.
