West After Syria Disintegration: Opposition Figure

DAMASCUS (Tasnim) – A Syrian opposition figure decried Western countries for pursuing a scheme to disintegrate Syria like what they had planned for Libya.

Speaking to the Tasnim News Agency, Adel Naeesa, a member of the presiding council of the Syrian Popular Front for Change and Liberation, endorsed Russia’s military action in Syria, saying it was aimed at preserving the Arab country’s unity and territorial integrity, unlike what the West has been looking for.

Naeesa stressed that there is a big difference between Russia and the West’s conduct in Syria.

Russia took action in Syria to voice support for the country’s integrity and stability, but the Westerners have been pursuing its disintegration, like their approach toward Libya, he explained.

His comments came against the backdrop of several rounds of negotiations in the Swiss city of Geneva for ending a five-year-old crisis in Syria. The peace talks are expected to resume on May 10.

Russia said the April round of intra-Syrian talks left an overall positive impression, although it was overshadowed by the suspension of the participation of Saudi-backed High Negotiations Committee (HNC).

Syria has been gripped by civil war since March 2011 with Takfiri terrorists, including Daesh, currently controlling parts of it, mostly in the east.

The Syrian conflict has killed at least 260,000 people, according to the UN, and more than half of Syria’s pre-war population of 22.4 million has been internally displaced or fled abroad.
