Turkey Seeking to Annex Aleppo: Syrian MP

DAMASCUS (Tasnim) – A senior Syrian lawmaker slammed neighboring Turkey for backing terrorist groups in the Arab country, saying that the recent escalation of attacks on Syria’s northern city of Aleppo by terrorist groups has its roots in Turkey’s schemes.

Speaking to the Tasnim News Agency, Boutros Merjaneh slammed armed rebels for their recent rocket attacks on civilians in Aleppo, which have killed dozens of women and children, saying that Turkey has a hand in the attacks.

“Undoubtedly, Turkey has a fundamental role in the current situation in Aleppo and Idlib (59 kilometers south west of Aleppo),” he stressed.

The Syrian parliamentarian added that since Aleppo is near Turkish borders, Ankara is “daydreaming” about annexing the city.

According to media reports, at least three women were killed and 17 others wounded in a rebel rocket attack on a hospital in Aleppo.

The attack was part of a shelling that left at least 19 people dead in government-controlled areas of the city on Tuesday.

Syria has been gripped by civil war since March 2011 with various terrorist groups, including Daesh (also known as ISIS or ISIL), currently controlling parts of it.

According to a new report by the Syrian Center for Policy Research, the conflict has claimed the lives of over 470,000 people, injured 1.9 million others, and displaced nearly half of the country’s pre-war population of about 23 million within or beyond its borders.
