Iran to Raise Electricity Generation Capacity to 100,000 MW: Official
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – An Iranian deputy energy minister unveiled plans for raising the country’s power generation capacity to 100,000 megawatts (MW) within the next few years.
The electricity generation capacity of the country’s power plants will hit 100,000 MW by 2020, Hushang Falahatian said at the 11th International Energy Conference in Tehran on Monday.
He noted that the electricity production capacity will increase by 2,500 megawatts in the current Iranian year, which ends in March 2017.
He also unveiled plans for upgrading the country’s generators to the F-class.
Back in November 2015, Energy Minister Hamid Chitchian unveiled plans for an increase in the country’s capacity of electricity generation and exports to neighboring countries.
Iran is now exporting around 12 billion kilowatt hours (kWh) of electricity to its neighbors each year, while the imports stand at an annual level of 4 billion kWh, the minister said at the time.
The country’s electricity industry ranks 14th in the world and first in the Middle East in terms of electricity generation.
