Envoy Reaffirms Iran’s Support for Iraq against Terrorism

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran’s Ambassador to Baghdad Hassan Danaeifar reiterated Tehran’s continued support for the Iraqi government in battling the Daesh (also known as ISIL and ISIS) Takfiri group.

At a meeting with Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi in  Baghdad on Saturday, Danaeifar hailed the Iraqi army’s latest gains on the battlefield against Daesh terrorists and stressed that the Islamic Republic will continue to stand by the Iraqi government and nation in its fight against terrorism, a statement released by the Iraqi premier’s office said.

The two officials also explored avenues to strengthen bilateral ties and cooperation in the field of energy and discussed the developments in the region.

The meeting came after the Iraqi army on June 17 raised the national flag on the main government complex in Fallujah, with Abadi congratulating the nation on the liberation of the city, situated roughly 69 kilometers west of the capital Baghdad.

"Fallujah has returned to the homeland. Our troops are in control of the city and have tightened their grip on its center," Abadi said in a televised address.

Fallujah was the first Iraqi city to fall to Daesh in 2014.
