Brexit A Big Loss, But Not An End to EU: German Politician

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – A German politician and member of the Bundestag described Britain's departure from the European Union (EU) as a great loss to the bloc, but stressed that it would not mark the beginning of the end of the union.

In an interview with the Tasnim News Agency, Wolfgang Bosbach, member of Germany’s conservative party - the Christian Democratic Union (CDU)- said Britons’ decision to exit from the 28-nation bloc was painful and bitter news for the EU and for the process of European consolidation.

However, he added, Brexit is not going to ruin the EU, and the process of greater unity among the EU member states will continue.

Bosbach said EU leaders in Brussels never expected Britain to seriously opt for an exit, noting that politicians in London made the big mistake of giving baseless promises and exaggerated justifications to campaign for the Brexit referendum.

After all, Britain can still remain a major political and economic partner for the European Union, whose members are trying to get closer and demonstrate unity in the face of London, the German politician added.

In a referendum on June 23, Britain voted to leave the European Union, forcing the resignation of Prime Minister David Cameron and dealing the biggest blow to the European project of greater unity since World War Two.

Global financial markets plunged as results from the referendum showed a near 52-48 percent split for leaving.
