Holder Iran Falls to William Jones Cup Fifth Place

TEHRAN (Tasnim) - Iran national basketball team lost to Chinese Taipei A 63-66 at the 38th William Jones Cup on Thursday.

Behnam Yakhchali was Iran’s top scorer with 23 points.

Defending champion Iran will meet table topper Mighty Sports on Friday.

The Persians moved down to fifth place in the standing table with eight points.

The Philippines is the first team with 10 points, followed by Egypt, South Korea, and Chinese Taipei A.

The competition started on July 23 at the Sinjhuang Gymasium in New Taipei City and will run until July 31.

The Iranian team is preparing for the 2016 FIBA Asia Challenge which is an international basketball tournament.

FIBA Asia will be hosted by Tehran, Iran, from September 9 to 18.

This tournament will serve as the first step in determining the process of the qualifiers for the 2017 FIBA Asia Cup which will feature teams from both FIBA Asia and FIBA Oceania for the first time.
