Azerbaijan Ready to Join Electricity System with That of Iran, Russia

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Azerbaijani Energy Minister Natig Aliyev said his country is “technically” prepared to help Tehran and Moscow on implementation of the North-South Transport Corridor (NSTC) project.

Azerbaijan is prepared to integrate its electric grid into that of the NSTC connecting Iran and Russia, Aliyev said on Thursday, Sputnik reported.

“Azerbaijan is technically fully prepared to join its energy system with that of Russia and Iran”.

The NSTC is a multipurpose route for the transit of goods between Iran, Russia, Europe, India and Central Asia via shipping lines, railroad and land routes.

The Azerbaijani minister further referred to an upcoming meeting between presidents of Iran, Russia and Azerbaijan scheduled to be held in Baku on August 8, saying, "The August meeting between the presidents of Azerbaijan, Russia and Iran will be promising in terms of resolving a number of issues, achieving concrete results and completing the project in the near future.”

During the summit, the three Caspian countries are going to sign new trilateral documents, while previous Tehran-Baku agreements on strategic cooperation will be also reviewed.

The summit will follow an April meeting among the Iranian, Russian and Azeri foreign ministers in Baku.

In that gathering, Iran’s Mohammad Javad Zarif, Russia’s Sergey Lavrov and Azerbaijan’s Elmar Mammadyarov discussed a range of issues, including ways to settle conflicts in the Nagorno-Karabakh region.
