Iran Volleyball Team Suffers Second Loss at Rio

RIO (Tasnim) – Iran volleyball team was defeated against Poland 3-2 (25-17, 25-23, 23-25, 20-25, 18-16) in the men’s volleyball tournament of Rio 2016 Olympic Games on Tuesday night.

Poland improved its win-loss record to 2-0 in Pool B, while Iran fell to 0-2.

The Persians had lost their first match to Argentina.

Bartosz Kurek had a tournament-high 23 points to lead the Polish victory, followed by Michal Kubiak with 18 and Mateusz Bieniek and Karol Klos with 12 apiece.

Seyed Mousavi led Iran with 18 points, including 8 blocks, while Shahram Mahmoudi and Milad Ebadipour added 16 and 15, respectively.

Lomacz landed one ace for an 8-5 advantage of Poland in the first set. They increased the lead at 11-6 with one spike of Bieniek and to 19-12 with one ace by Klos. It was a lopsided opening set that concluded 25-17.

The second set was battle point by point that finished 25-23 with spikes by Kurek and Bartosz around a Polish unforced error.

Ebadipour gave Iran a 6-2 lead in the third set, but Poland came back to tie at 7-7 with a spike by Kurek. The set was tied 17 times before Iran claimed it following two Polish errors by Klos and Kubiak, fivb.com wrote.

Iran pulled one spectacular comeback to claim the fourth set after trailing 19-16. Two spikes by Mousavi around one by Ebadipour produced the tie and Iran continued its inspired game until the end 25-20.

In the tie-breaker teams traded sides with Iran leading 8-7 following the block by Mousavi against Kurek. Poland tied 8-8 with the spike by Bieniek. At 13-13, Mahmoudi scored for match-point but Ebadipour served out of bounds. At 15-all Bieniek served one ace for match-point but then missed long. Poland won 18-16 with spike by Klos and opponent error.
