Iran Urges NAM’s Stronger Int’l Role

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian President Hassan Rouhani voiced the country’s willingness to strengthen ties with other members of the Non-Aligned Movement, African states in particular, calling for the NAM’s push for settlement of the problems caused by the West.

Western countries’ political and military interference in many parts of the world is among the major challenges to the international community, President Rouhani said on Tuesday, emphasizing the positive role of the NAM in fixing those problems.

The Iranian president made the comments in a meeting with Burundi’s Minister of External Relations and International Cooperation Alain Aime Nyamitwe in Tehran.

“The Non-Aligned Movement countries should play a goog role in the international arena by strengthening relations and cooperation,” Rouhani added, stressing the need for stronger interaction between Iran and Burundi as two members of the NAM.

Highlighting the common goals of Iran and African nations, President Rouhani called for mutual support in international organizations.

For his part, the visiting Burundian minister said Tehran and Bujumbura have common goals, values and views when it comes to bilateral, regional and international cooperation.

Urging closer cooperation between the two countries in international circles, particularly the NAM, Nyamitwe praised Iran’s support for the people of Burundi and its independence.

Expansion of relations with African countries in all political, economic and cultural fields has been a matter of prime importance in Iran’s foreign policy agenda.

President Rouhani, who took office in August 2013, has repeatedly stressed his government’s interest in boosting relations with African nations.
