Iranian Diplomat Calls Yemen’s Supreme Political Council ‘Legal, Respectable’

In remarks released on Saturday, Jaberi Ansari pointed to the Yemeni people’s massive support for the Supreme Political Council and called the council’s decisions very important and worthy of international attention.

He further emphasized that the ongoing crisis in Yemen is a major test for the international community and the United Nations Security Council to demonstrate to what extent they can act live up to their accepted standards.

Undoubtedly, no party can question the legitimacy of the Yemeni parliament, the Iranian deputy minister said, adding that all of the decisions of the legislative body, including the establishment of the Supreme Political Council, are legal and respectable.

The Yemeni people took to streets in the capital, Sana’a, in their millions before converging on a main square to support the Supreme Political Council, formed after peace talks with the Saudi side broke down.

The decision to establish the council was made by Yemen’s Houthi Ansarullah movement and former President Ali Abdullah Saleh’s General People’s Congress party back in late July.

It was formally launched on August 6, when the Houthis and Saleh’s faction announced that they both had an equal share in the 10-member body.

The developments come as Yemen’s defenseless people are under massive attacks by a coalition led by the Saudi regime.

Riyadh, which started its relentless aggression against Yemen nearly 17 months ago, has reached none of its objectives in the Arabian Peninsula country so far.

Since March 2015, Saudi Arabia and some of its Arab allies have been launching deadly airstrikes against the Houthi Ansarullah movement in an attempt to restore power to the fugitive former President Abd Rabbuh Mansour Hadi, a close ally of Riyadh.

Nearly 9,400 Yemenis, including 4,000 women and children, have lost their lives in the deadly military campaign.
