Iraqi MP: Ties with Iran to Boost Regional Security

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – An Iraqi lawmaker hailed Iran as a strategic player in regional developments, saying Baghdad’s closer relations with Tehran will contribute to security in the region.

Iran is a great and strategic country, and positive relations with it will strengthen regional security, Lebanon’s al-Ahed news website quoted Abbas al-Bayati as saying.

Bayati is member of the Iraqi parliament’s foreign policy commission who accompanied Parliament Speaker Salim al-Jabouri in a recent visit to Iran.

The lawmaker said the visit was aimed at discussing ways to battle terrorism and reconstruct Iraq after cleansing the Arab country of Daesh (ISIL) militants.

Bayati further hailed Iran’s continued support for Iraq, saying his country would have fallen into the hands of terrorists without the backing from Iran, Iraqi religious authorities and voluntary forces.

During their stay in Tehran, Jabouri and his accompanying delegation held talks with senior Iranian officials on the latest developments in the region.

Iran, a close ally of Iraq, has been supporting the Arab nation in the fight against Daesh since the terrorist group invaded Iraq in summer 2014.
