Iraq’s Al-Nujaba Movement Reiterates Support for Sunni Muslims

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Secretary general of Iraq’s al-Nujaba Movement, a major Shiite resistance group, expressed full support for Sunni Muslims, saying his forces have opened Sunni mosques in Shiite areas and protect them against threats.

In a meeting with Secretary General of the World Forum for Proximity of Islamic Schools of Thought (WFPIST) Ayatollah Mohsen Araki in Tehran on Tuesday, Sheikh Akram al-Kaabi underlined that al-Nujaba Movement works in cooperation with Sunni Muslims as part of efforts to strengthen unity in the Arab nation.

The top political figure said his movement, an offshoot of Iraqi voluntary forces (known as the Popular Mobilization Units or Hashid al-Shaabi), has set up a department for unity and proximity of religions, and has deployed Sunni clerics to the areas recently liberated from the Daesh (ISIL) terrorist group’s control.

According to Kaabi, certain Iraqi politicians affiliated with the US, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia, have been pressing for the return of radical clerics to Sunni mosques in the recently-recaptured areas, particularly to Fallujah.

Highlighting al-Nujaba’s close bonds with Sunnis, the secretary general said the movement has formed battalions including the Sunni residents of Fallujah and Tikrit, and they faught alongside Shiite fighters in the operations to retake Iraqi territories from the terrorists.

For his part, the secretary general of WFPIST warned of hostile attempts to sow discord among Iraqi groups, calling for constant efforts to preserve the Iraqi nation’s unity.

Kaabi had announced earlier that Hashid al-Shaabi has very good ties with Sunni Muslims and encompasses all Iraqi sects, including Shiites, Sunnis and Christians.
