Spokesman: Iran Favors Any Compromise on Political Settlement of Syria Crisis

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran would welcome any compromise that contributes to settlement of the crisis in Syria politically, Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman announced Monday.

“We welcome any compromise that would result in a political solution (to Syria crisis),” Qassemi told reporters at a press conference in Tehran, when asked about Iran’s view on recent talks between US and Russia on Syria.

With its economic infrastructures ruined in the war, Syria is experiencing tough conditions, Qassemi noted, saying military action does not appear to be the only way out of the impasses in the Arab country.

“The issue of Syria is so complicated that we do not expect to reach a solution, but we hope to find one in the short term,” the spokesperson added.

Commenting on Iran’s initiatives for peace in Syria, Qassemi said the country has proposed its plans in talks with the regional countries.

There are a lot of plans, on which the parties have failed to reach a consensus, he added, saying there are “damaging countries and groups” that obstruct the peace process in Syria.

His comments came after US President Barack Obama and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin met Monday as talks between their governments on ending violence in Syria ended without an agreement.

While Syria has been gripped by foreign-backed militancy since March 2011, Iran insists that any solution to the prolonged crisis needs to receive approval from the Syrian government, nation and political groups.

According to the UN, over 400,000 people have been killed in the conflict, which has also displaced over half of the Arab country’s pre-war population of about 23 million.
