Iran, Russia Working on Stable Isotopes

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran and Russia have developed cooperation on the production of stable isotopes as part of joint nuclear activities, Head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) Ali Akbar Salehi announced.

Speaking at a joint press conference with head of Russian state nuclear energy corporation Rosatom in southern port city of Bushehr on Saturday, Salehi described nuclear industry as the epitome of “strategic cooperation” between Tehran and Moscow.

Apart from joint action to construct two new units at Iran’s Bushehr nuclear power plant, the two countries are collaborating on stable isotopes production, he added.

Salehi also noted that he and Sergei Kiriyenko, Rosatom chief, have signed an agreement on the production of nuclear fuel within the framework of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), a nuclear deal between Tehran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany).

In a ceremony in Bushehr on Saturday morning, Iran and Russia began the construction of the second unit of Bushehr nuclear power, while a third unit is also scheduled to be built afterwards.

Back in April, Russia’s permanent representative to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Vladimir Voronkov said a scientific center is to be launched at Iran’s Fordow nuclear facility for the production of stable isotopes.

And in late August, Deputy Head of AEOI Asghar Zarean unveiled plans for setting up a pilot plant for production of stable isotopes, which he said will add Iran to the list of global producers.

“Only countries like Germany, Russia or Ireland could produce stable isotopes while Iran has also joined them,” Mehr News Agency quoted his as saying at the time.
