DAMASCUS (Tasnim) – A total of 71 trucks carrying humanitarian aid have entered four besieged areas of Syria to deliver help to thousands of trapped residents reeling from the ongoing crisis in the Arab country, a report said.

According to Tasnim dispatches, the trucks carrying medical items and food supplies arrived in Syria's southwestern town of Madaya, Kefraya and al-Fouaa rebel-held towns, located in northern Idlib, and southwestern city of Zabadani on Sunday.

The trucks were delivered to the areas for the first time in almost six months, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) said.

"71 trucks delivering aid to 60,000 people in 4 towns —incl. food, medical supplies & hygiene kits," ICRC said in a message posted on its Twitter account.

18 trucks unloaded their cargo in Madaya and 4 others in Zabadani, the report added.

Also, 17 trucks reached Kefraya and al-Fouaa, the two Shiite populated towns where people have no access to clean water and adequate sanitation.

Some 400,000 people are under siege in Syria as the foreign-backed militancy is wreaking havoc across much of the country.

There has been nearly a complete media blackout on the situation in Kefraya and al-Fouaa by western media.

Syria has been gripped by civil war since March 2011 with various terrorist groups, including Daesh (ISIS or ISIL), currently controlling parts of it.

According to a report by the Syrian Center for Policy Research, the conflict has claimed the lives of over 470,000 people, injured 1.9 million others, and displaced nearly half of the country’s pre-war population of about 23 million within or beyond its borders.
