Iranian Speaker Raps US False Show of Fighting Terrorism

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran’s Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani decried Washington’s hypocritical approach to the fight against terrorism, blaming the collapse of a recent ceasefire plan in Syria on the US deceitful conduct.

While the US was thought to be coming to its senses by devising a ceasefire plan in Syria, it once again opted for deception and proved to be a supporter of terrorism by bombing Syrian army forces, Larijani said on Monday.

The Iranian parliament speaker made the comments at a joint press conference with his Syrian counterpart Hadiya Khalaf Abbas, in Tehran.

The US is deceitfully raising the issue of counterterrorism, Larijani added.

He further recommended certain countries that have been fanning the flames of war in Syria over the past five years to come to the understanding that the threat of terrorism is not confined to Syria and that such a crisis could happen in the US or Europe as well.

Russia and the US had negotiated a truce plan in Syria, but the week-long ceasefire collapsed on September 19 following a US-led coalition airstrike on a Syrian army post.

At least 90 Syrian troops were killed near the eastern city of Deir ez-Zor on September 17 when US-led warplanes bombed their position.
Syria has been gripped by civil war since March 2011 with various terrorist groups, including Daesh (also known as ISIS or ISIL), currently controlling parts of it.

According to a report by the Syrian Center for Policy Research, the conflict has claimed the lives of over 470,000 people, injured 1.9 million others, and displaced nearly half of the country’s pre-war population of about 23 million within or beyond its borders.
