IRGC Forces Foil Terrorist Attack in Western Iran

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps forces managed to foil a terrorist attack by militants of the Party for Free Life in Kurdistan (PJAK) near the western city of Marivan in Kurdistan Province, a top IRGC commander in the province announced.

Speaking to the Tasnim News Agency, Commander of the IRGC in Kurdistan Province Brigadier General Mohammad Hossein Rajabi said several members of the PJAK terrorist group, who intended to enter the country, were identified by the IRGC forces of the province and forced to flee.

He added that the anti-revolutionary militants armed with light and medium weapons fired a rocket-propelled grenade at the IRGC forces, which did not explode.

The clash occurred in Gol-e Cheydar, a village near Marvian, and ended after the escape of the PJAK terrorists from the region, the commander noted.

PJAK is an offshoot of the internationally-recognized terrorist group, the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), which conducts deadly operations in western Iran, northern Iraq and southeastern Turkey.

PJAK terrorists are involved in regular armed clashes with Iranian security forces along the country’s western border with Iraq’s semi-autonomous Kurdistan region.

Terrorist attacks are rare in Iran, but al-Qaeda-linked and other groups stage hit-and-run assaults in border areas from time to time.
