Syrian Adviser: Resumption of Damascus-Cairo Ties to Benefit Regional Security
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – A senior adviser to Syrian Prime Minister Imad Khamis said the thaw in political relations between Damascus and Cairo is in the interest of security in the Middle East region as well as the anti-Israeli Axis of Resistance.
Speaking to the Tasnim News Agency, Abdul-Qader Azouz, who is also a professor of politics and used to teach at Aleppo University, pointed to recent developments in the relations between the Syrian and Egyptian governments and said the ties resumed after Cairo realized the fact that its national security had been threatened and that stability in Syria and the region is in the interest of security in Egypt.
The relationship between the two governments, which has witnessed ups and downs over the past years but has never been severed completely “forms a pillar of regional security”, he said.
The top adviser went on to say that the Egyptian people’s approach has never been in favor of normalization of ties with the Zionist regime of Israel.
Syrian security services chief Ali Mamluk has recently met with Egyptian officials in his first public foreign visit in five years, state media in Damascus said on Monday.
Mamluk met with Egypt’s head of general intelligence Khaled Fawzy and other “high-level security officials” during his one-day visit.
The Syrian and Egyptian officials “agreed to coordinate on political positions... and strengthen coordination on fighting the terrorism faced by both countries,” State news agency SANA reported.
Egypt’s ousted president Mohammad Mursi, who was a strong backer of Syria’s extremist opposition, cut diplomatic ties with Damascus in June 2013. Mursi was removed from power in a military coup one month later by President Abdel-Fattah el-Sisi, who was the army chief at the time.
