Iran’s Velayati Urges Global Resolve to Counter Terrorism

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Head of the Strategic Research Center of Iran’s Expediency Council Ali Akbar Velayati warned against the spread of terrorism across the world, saying that all countries, including Europeans, should help counter the phenomenon.

Speaking at a meeting with visiting Swiss Deputy Foreign Minister Yves Rossier in Tehran on Wednesday, Velayati pointed to the root causes of the emergence of terrorist groups in the region and said some countries have created Takfiri terrorist groups to harm legitimate governments in the region and sow discord.

He added that now it can be seen that the threat of such terror groups is not limited to the region but it has also undermined security in other countries across the world, including the Europe.

Velayati also called for “serious determination” of all countries to combat terrorist currents.

The Swiss diplomat, for his part, highlighted the important role of Iran in resolving regional problems, including the crises facing Iraq and Syria, expressing the hope that sustainable peace would be restored to the Arab countries.

Since June 10, 2014, Iraq has witnessed a fresh wave of violence after militants from the Daesh (ISIL or ISIS) terrorist group took control of large swathes of the war-stricken country.

Syria has also been gripped by civil war since March 2011 with Takfiri terrorists from various groups, including the Daesh, currently controlling parts of it.

According to a report by the Syrian Center for Policy Research, the conflict has claimed the lives of over 470,000 people, injured 1.9 million others, and displaced nearly half of the country’s pre-war population of about 23 million within or beyond its borders.
