Iranian Envoy Holds Diplomatic Sessions on Syria in Russia Sochi


TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran’s representative to a conference in Sochi, Russia, on the settlement of Syria crisis held separate diplomatic meetings on the sidelines of the event and exchanged views about a range of issues, including the latest efforts to resolve the protracted crisis in Syria.

Jaberi Ansari, the Iranian foreign minister's special assistant on political affairs, and the United Nations Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura exchanged views about a range of issues including the latest efforts to resolve Syria crisis.

In the meeting held in Russia’s Sochi on Tuesday on the sidelines of the Syrian National Dialogue Congress, the two sides held talks on the process of the congress and the future plans of the UN envoy for the Arab country.

Jaberi Ansari and de Mistura also underlined the necessity to continue consultations in line with efforts to help end the Syrian crisis.

Prior to the meeting, the Iranian diplomat had met with China's Special Envoy for Syria Xie Xiaoyan.

During the session, Jaberi Ansari and Xiaoyan stressed the need to boost Tehran-Beijing cooperation to resolve the Syrian issue and fight against terrorism.

The Iranian deputy foreign minister also held separate meetings with the representatives of the Syrian opposition groups participating the Sochi peace talks on Tuesday.

The Syrian National Dialogue Congress kicked off in the Russian Black Sea resort of Sochi on Tuesday. The opening of the Congress was delayed as a group of armed opposition members arriving from Turkey had set preconditions for their participation.

Delegations from Iran, Russia, and Turkey, as the initiators of the peace talks, as well as a UN delegation led by de Mistura attended the congress.
