West Afghan City of Anar Dara Falls to Taliban

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Anar Dara, a city in Afghanistan’s western province of Farah that lies some 90 kilometers from the Iranian border, fell to the Taliban, local sources said Monday.

Local officials said the Taliban militants launched attacks on Anar Dara on Sunday night and took control of the base of Afghan security forces and seized a number of military vehicles in the town.

Dadullah Qaneh, a member of Farah’s provincial council told Ariana News that the Taliban attacks on the district started last night and the police headquarters fell to the militants this morning.

Naser Mehri, a spokesperson for governor of Farah, confirmed reports on the collapse of the city, but declined to provide details on the casualties.

Meanwhile, an official told Afghanistan’s 1TV that 10 police forces have been killed in the raid.

The Taliban, who ruled Afghanistan before being ousted by a US-led invasion in late 2001, have renewed armed insurgency, launching attacks on Afghan military forces.

Along with attacks on Afghan security forces, the Taliban have in recent months focused on the western province of Farah, where the Daesh (ISIL) terrorist group is trying to gain territories.

Daesh hoisted its flag in Afghanistan for the first time in the Khak-e Sefid region in Farah.
