Iran’s 1st Geothermal Power Plant to Come on Steam by Yearend

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran’s deputy minister of energy for electricity and energy affairs said on Tuesday that the first geothermal power plant in the country will come on stream in summer of the current year.

About 50 percent of power plants in the country have been built by expert domestic engineers, Homayoun Haeri stated.

Speaking at the 9th Conference of Iran Power Plant Industry, he put the installed power plant capacity of the country at the beginning of the victory of the 1979 Islamic Revolution at over 7,000 megawatts, adding that it has now reached 91,000 megawatts.

Currently, a major part of these power plant units is related to steam-operated power plants which greatly help the stability of the network, Haeri stated.

He pointed to the activity of the gas-operated power plant units in the country and noted that the Ministry of Energy is planning to turn all these units into combined cycle power plants.

The deputy energy minister pointed out that 70 percent of the combined cycle power plants of the country have been constructed by expert Iranian engineers.

Elsewhere in his remarks, Haeri referred to the latest situation of renewable power plants in Iran and put the current production capacity of recyclable power plants in the country at 1,000 megawatts.

With the studies conducted in this regard, the production capacity of the renewable power plants in the country will increase by 10,000 megawatts, he added.

Iran is one of the world’s four major power plant manufacturing countries as it enjoys the capability to construct 95 percent of power plant equipment.
