SCO, BRICS Able to Play Significant Role in New World Order: Iran FM

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) and BRICS Group of Countries including Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa can play a significant role in the new world order.

Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian, who is in Cape Town to attend the meeting of BRICS Foreign Ministers, said in a meeting with his South African counterpart Naledi Pandor on Thursday.

While expressing his thanks to South African foreign minister for inviting him to attend a joint meeting with BRICS Group, Amirabdollahian stated, “It is hoped that the mechanism of Iran’s membership and other countries willing to join BRICS will be defined by main members as soon as possible."

Pointing to the world order which is changing rapidly, Iran’s top diplomat emphasized that SCO and BRICS enjoy high capabilities and capacities to play an important role in the new world order.

Elsewhere in his remarks, Amirabdollahian referred to the planning made for organizing Joint Economic Commission meeting between the two countries of Iran and South Africa in Pretoria and called this meeting in the development of bilateral ties ‘important’.

He also emphasized the significance of implementation of the cooperation documents inked between the two countries previously.

Regarding the successful experiences of Iran in helping the neighboring states in the fight against terrorism, Amirabdollahian added that suitable ways have been paved for the cooperation of the two countries in this field.

He also appreciated South African government’s support for the people of Palestine.

South African foreign minister, for her part, hailed the presence of Iranian foreign minister in Cape Town for BRICS meeting and welcomed strengthening of economic cooperation between the two countries.

Turning to the recent developments happened in southern part of Africa, Naledi Pandor said that terrorism is one of the important hazards facing countries in this region.
