CBI Governor Meets IMF Chief in Washington for Bilateral Talks


TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The governor of the Central Bank of Iran (CBI) met and held talks with the managing director of International Monetary Fund (IMF) in Washington on Friday to discuss bilateral issues.

In his meeting with Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) Kristalina Georgieva, Governor of the Central Bank of Iran Mohammadreza Farzin emphasized on increasing interaction with this prestigious international monetary body with observing the national interests especially during the tightened sanctions imposed by the US government against Iran.

IMF chief seized this opportunity to express her thanks to Iran’s efforts in supproting member states of the Fund including Pakistan, Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Ghana and Afghanistan.

This meeting is the resumption of interactions between CBI and IMF and can lead to presenting a positive image of Iran’s economy, she emphasized.

The governor of Central Bank of Iran, for his part, voiced his satisfaction with strengthening Iran’s relations with this monetary body after a period of hiatus.

Turning to Iran’s rapid financing request during the coronavirus pandemic, which had been raised by the then Iranian government, Farzin stated, “Since Iran’s request to get loan from the Fund was rejected, the country managed to relied on its domestic capabilities in dealing with the coronavirus pandemic and launched the general vaccination in the country in the best form possible.”

With the implementation of programs in correcting policies of economic stability, Central Bank of Iran will take giant stride in reducing the rising inflation rate by 30 percent in the current year (to end March 20, 2024), CBI governor added.

In conclusion, Farzin once again called for increasing interactions with this international monetary body through observing national interests especially during the tough sanctions imposed by the US government against Iran.

Some senior managers and directors of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) including Director of the Middle East and Central Asia Department at the International Monetary Fund Jihad Azour attended the meeting.
