Key Member of Ansar al-Furqan Terror Cell Caught in Southeast Iran

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – A senior member of the so-called Ansar al-Furqan terrorist group has been arrested in Iran’s southeastern province of Sistan and Balouchestan, the provincial police commander said.

The provincial police chief said the main element of the Ansar al-Furqan terrorist group, whose identity has been discovered, was arrested during an operation in Zahedan on Saturday evening.

An AK-47 rifle and hundreds of bullets have been confiscated in the operation, the commander said.

The police chief said the arrestee had been involved in several terrorist attacks on the police and IRGC bases in Sistan and Balouchestan and had a role in the martyrdom of two Basij forces.

A criminal investigation is underway to capture his accomplices, the commander said.

In 2015, a senior official at Iran's intelligence ministry said the Ansar al-Furqan terrorist group had been formed in 2014 with financial and arms support from a number of Western and Arab states to cause insecurity and terror in the southeastern part of the country.
