Bahraini Opposition Bloc: Al Khalifa Seeking to Silence Voice of Dissent

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Bahrain's main opposition party, al-Wefaq National Islamic Society, underlined that Al Khalifa’s move to file a lawsuit against the group is in line with the regime's efforts to silence voices of dissent.

Al-Wefaq is playing its normal political role in line with its position as a party opposed to the ruling party’s policies, the opposition group said in a statement, adding that political societies’ general approach is to supervise the government performance.

The statement further said that leveling targeted accusation against a political party like al-Wefaq is aimed at exerting pressure on the party, restricting its political activities, silencing opposition voices and blocking legitimate opposition.

The statement came after the Interior Ministry of Bahrain announced on Tuesday that it has lodged a complaint against the opposition group over criminal allegations.

The Al Khalifa regime is pressing ahead with its crackdown on opposition, after it arrested Sheikh Ali Salman, the secretary general of al-Wefaq, on December 27, 2014.

The tiny Persian Gulf Island state has been the scene of an ongoing suppression of protesters who demand the release of opposition figures.

The arrests are part of the Al Khalifah regime’s brutal crackdown on anti-regime protesters since 2011. Scores of people have been killed and thousands more wounded during the crackdown.
