Iran Considering Prisoner Swap with 4 Countries

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – An Iranian official unveiled plans for the exchange of prisoners with Afghanistan, Tajikistan, Somalia and Iraq.

Iran’s Deputy Minister of Justice Seyed Ali Raeesolsadati told reporters on Friday that plans for the prisoner exchange with those countries have been devised by a task force on convict swap, over which he presides.

As part of an agreement signed between Iran and Qatar, he noted, six Iranian convicts were repatriated from Qatar on Wednesday.

Iran has extradition treaties with a number of countries. In a recent case, Iran and Japan in January finalized details of an extradition treaty after 5 years of technical talks and exchange of diplomatic delegations.

An extradition treaty allows two countries to exchange their respective convicted citizens, so the inmates would complete their prison terms at home.
