Iran Urges Pakistan to Boost Border Control

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Mohammad Baqer Nobakht, the spokesman for the Iranian administration, said that Tehran has officially reminded the government of Pakistan of its obligations to reinforce control over the shared borders with Iran.

That terrorists can easily cross the borders is due to the lack of control on the side of Iran's neighboring countries, especially Pakistan, Nobakht said in a press conference on Tuesday.

The Iranian spokesman went on to say that Tehran has formally asked the Pakistani government to exert more control over the joint borders with Iran.

"We have endeavored to make up for their lack (of control) by putting more focus on the borders," Nobakht further noted.

A few weeks ago, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif made an official visit to Pakistan, where he called for the expansion of mutual cooperation between the two countries against security challenges in shared borders.

He described the terrorist attacks happening occasionally in border areas between Iran and Pakistan as "sad and regrettable", and said promotion of security cooperation between the two countries is crucial to countering such attacks.

Zarif's comments came three days after eight Iranian border guards were killed in the country's southeastern province of Sistan and Balouchestan when assailants coming from Pakistan opened fire on them in an ambush and escaped across the border.
