Iranian MPs Due in Brussels for EP Visit

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – A delegation of Iranian lawmakers left Tehran for Brussels on Tuesday to visit the European Parliament (EP) and hold meetings with its officials.

The delegation is led by chairman of the Iranian group of parliamentary relations, Kazem Jalali.

The trip is part of reciprocal visits between Iran and the European Parliament.

Following the election of President Hassan Rouhani in 2013, Iran ramped up efforts to strengthen ties with Europe.

In December 2013, an eight-member delegation from the European Parliament visited Tehran and held talks with a number of senior Iranian officials.

The European Parliament is the directly elected parliamentary institution of the 28-member European Union (EU), which together with the Council of the European Union and the European Commission, exercises the legislative function of the EU.

The parliament is currently composed of 766 members, who have been directly elected every five years by universal suffrage since 1979.
