US Violated Int'l Law by Placing Embargo on Airlines Dealing with Iran: Official

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – A senior official with Iran's Civil Aviation Organization (CAO) announced on Sunday that the US government has violated the international law by imposing sanctions against two aviation companies that sold second-hand civilian aircraft to Iran.

Deputy Head of Civil Aviation Organization (CAO) for Aviation and International Affairs Mohammad Khodakarami denounced the US government's recent move to impose sanctions on Iraqi-based Al-Naser Airlines and Sky Blue Bird Aviation in the United Arab Emirates.

He underscored that according to the provisions of the international law that determines the limits of the authority of states, exercising jurisdiction over individuals and businesses by a government is subject to the verification of relationship between that person and that government.

He added that in this case, the US claims have no basis according to "the principles of legal certainty".

The Iranian official further emphasized that based on the article 33 of the Convention on International Civil Aviation (also known as Chicago Convention), the contracting countries, including the US, have agreed to recognize the air fleets registered in other member states.

He went on to say that also according to the article 44 of the convention, the member countries should avoid discrimination against any contracting country.

The two companies were targeted by the US Treasury Department over sales of nine used Airbus commercial aircraft to Iran's Mahan Air earlier this month.

The Treasury order blocks property owned by Al-Naser Airlines and Sky Blue Bird Aviation and prevents Americans from doing business with them.
