Iran Condemns Israeli Court's Jail Sentence for Palestinian Speaker

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Marziyeh Afkham strongly condemned a recent jail sentence issued by the Zionist regime of Israel for the speaker of the Palestinian Legislative Council (PLC).

In a statement on Tuesday evening, Afkham emphasized that the continued detention of the elected representatives of the Palestinian people and the “baseless” sentences issued against them by the Israeli regime indicate the Tel Aviv’s “violent and futile approach” to silence the voice of the Palestinian nation.

She further expressed deep concern over the appalling conditions of the Palestinian captives held in the Israeli jails, saying that they are in “unbelievable" conditions.

Afkham further also called on the international and parliamentary bodies to make an immediate and serious response to the crimes committed by the Israeli regime against the Palestinian prisoners.

On Monday, the Ofer Court, an Israeli military court, sentenced Abdul Aziz Duwaik to 12 months in jail and a fine of six thousand Israeli shekels (USD 1,550) on charges of delivering a speech at a pro-resistance celebration three years ago, according to local media.

The Ahrar Center for Prisoner Studies and Human Rights condemned the verdict, demanding the immediate release of all Palestinian prisoners currently being held at Israeli detention facilities, the 67-year-old PLC speaker in particular.
