Over 280 Illegal Immigrants Arrested in Iran's Northwestern Province

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – 282 foreigners who intended to leave Iran illegally through the country's northwestern borders, were arrested, commander of West Azarbaijan Province border guards announced on Saturday.

Investigations on the case began when the intelligence forces of the province were informed that a huge number of illegal immigrants were hiding in mountainous areas along Maku borders, Brigadier General Shahram Abbasi told the Tasnim News Agency.

He went on to say that the hiding place was kept under surveillance for over four days, and finally, 282 illegal immigrants from Afghanistan and Pakistan were detained.

General Abbasi further stressed that the Iranian armed forces are "fully prepared" to counter any type of threats along the country's borders.

Iran is located on a major transit route for the trafficking of humans and drugs as well as illegal migrations, mainly from Afghanistan and Pakistan to European countries.
