Iran's UN Envoy Urges Action against Youth Recruitment by Extremists

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran's deputy ambassador to the United Nations called for global measures to restrain the violent extremist groups from recruiting young people via the Internet.

"Violent extremism is a problem we are now grappling with in the Middle East region and elsewhere in the world. It's a pity that most of those entrapped by such extremist groups are young people, a remarkable number of whom coming from the West," Gholam Hossein Dehqani said on Friday in an address at the High-Level Event of the UN General Assembly marking the 20th Anniversary of the World Programme of Action for Youth to highlight Youth Priorities in the Post-2015 Development Agenda.

"Terrorists take advantage of the low experience level and idealism of the youth and entrap them via deceptive propaganda," he warned.

Dehqani then emphasized the necessity for approaches to thwart the propaganda plots that extremist groups employ in the social networks to seduce and recruit young people.

He also voiced Iran's readiness to cooperate and exchange experiences with the international community to contribute to the success of the World Programme of Action for Youth (WPAY).

The program was adopted by the UN General Assembly in 1995 and provides a policy framework and practical guidelines for national action and international support to improve the situation of young people around the world.
