Tehran-Damascus Ties Serve Regional Stability: Syrian Speaker

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Syrian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Jihad al-Laham said his country's relations with Iran contribute to stability in the region.

Speaking Monday at a press conference with his Iranian counterpart in Tehran, Laham described the relations between Iran and Syria as a "defensive wall" in the face of devastating waves in the region.

He also praised Iran, Russia and the BRICS countries -five major emerging national economies- for their backing for the Syrian nation in the fight on terrorism.

Deploring the lack of real determination at the regional and international levels for countering terrorism, Laham said terrorists are still being armed and financed despite the multiple resolutions that have called for an end to support for such groups.

Syria has been grappling with deadly foreign-backed militancy fueled by Takfiri groups since March 2011. More than 222,000 people have so far been killed in the crisis.

Over 3.8 million Syrians have also fled the violence to other countries, and more than 7.2 million others have become internally displaced, according to the United Nations.
