Iranian Diplomat, Saudi FM Discuss Regional Problems

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for African and Middle Eastern Affairs Hossein Amir Abdollahian and Saudi Foreign Minister Adel Al-Jubeir held talks on the problems facing the Middle East region.

Speaking to the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB), Amir Abdollahian said during the meeting, held in the Saudi Arabian city of Jeddah on Tuesday, several regional issues were discussed and Iran's views on them were conveyed explicitly.

The talks were held on the sidelines of an emergency meeting of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) on the crisis in Yemen.

The Iranian diplomat said he stressed during the meeting that adopting a military approach in the region would not be constructive and that Iran emphasizes the need to end wars in the region and resolve problems through political means.

Amir-Abdollahian’s visit to Saudi Arabia is the first by an Iranian official since the Saudi-led coalition started its aggression against Yemen nearly three months ago.

The coalition has been carrying out deadly air strikes against the Houthi Ansarullah movement in an attempt to restore power to the fugitive former President Abd Rabbuh Mansour Hadi, a close ally of Riyadh.

The Saudi airstrikes have claimed the lives of more than 2,600 people so far while over 8,000 others have been wounded, most of them civilians.
