Iran Condemns Assassination of Egypt's Top Prosecutor

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran's foreign ministry spokeswoman condemned the assassination of Egypt's public prosecutor in a car bomb attack on his convoy, describing it as a terrorist act aimed at creating instability in the Arab country.

Marziyeh Afkham on Tuesday slammed the terroist attack and voiced Tehran's condolences to the Egyptian people and government as well as the bereaved families of those killed in the tragic incident.

"The terrorist act is part of a plot aimed at destabilizing the great country of Egypt," she went on to say.

According to media reports, a powerful bomb killed Egypt's top prosecutor Hisham Barakat as he drove to work in Cairo Monday morning.

The prosecutor was the most senior official to be killed in Egypt since the insurgency began in 2013, after the military ousted the country's first freely elected president, Mohamed Mursi of the Muslim Brotherhood.

General Osama Bedeir, chief of security in Cairo, said the bomb was in a car parked along Barakat's route and was probably detonated by remote control.
