Indian PM Hails Iran's Role in Regional Security, Anti-Terror Campaign

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday highlighted the role Iran plays in the fight against terrorism, and urged for cooperation between the two countries to eradicate the evil phenomenon.

Speaking in a meeting with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani in the Russian city of Ufa, Modi highlighted the role of Iran in identifying and eradicating the roots of terrorism in the Middle East and in establishing peace and security.

"We should not let terrorism cast any doubts on Islam and Muslims in the world," Modi further said in the meeting.

He also noted that Iran and India, along with other like-minded countries, should cooperate with each other based on Iran's proposal in the UN (WAVE) in defense of humanity and a world without violence.

Modi made the remarks in reference to Rouhani’s ‘World Against Violence and Extremism’ (WAVE) proposal, which was approved by the United Nations General Assembly in December 2013.

Rouhani, for his part, described as "significant" and "sensitive" the roles Iran and India play in securing stability in the region and fighting terrorism.

"Cooperation between the two countries is very essential not only in trade and economic fields, but also in eradication of terrorism in the region," he added.

President Rouhani arrived in Ufa on Wednesday night to attend BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa) and Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summits and to hold meetings with his counterparts.
