Iran’s UN Envoy Hits Back at US Counterpart’s Allegations

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran’s envoy to the United Nations dismissed the accusations the US Ambassador to the UN Samantha Power had leveled against Iran, stressing that Tehran seeks stability in the Middle East region, contrary to Washington’s belligerent attitudes.

The 15-memebr United Nations Security Council held a session on Monday and unanimously passed a resolution endorsing a document Iran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany) have finalized on Tehran's nuclear program.

At the meeting, the US envoy said a final nuclear deal does not change Washington’s "profound concern about human rights violations committed by the Iranian government or about the instability Iran fuels beyond its nuclear program, from its support for terrorist proxies to repeated threats against Israel to its other destabilizing activities in the region."

Iran’s Ambassador Gholamali Khoshroo then departed from his prepared speech to react to Ms. Power’s allegations, something he slammed as "baseless accusations".

“Before, I conclude, let me briefly thank all the ambassadors who supported JCPOA and also those countries that helped the deal happen,” he said.

“(Let me) react to some baseless accusations leveled by some of previous speakers.  It is ironic that the distinguished Ambassador of the United States accused my Government of destabilizing the region and terrorism. The country that invaded two countries in our region and created favorable grounds for the growth of terrorism and extremism is not well placed to raise such an accusation against my country.”

“Feckless and reckless acts of the United States in our region for so many years are at the root of many challenges that we are now facing in our neighborhood.  Iran is a stable country in an unstable region. As we want our stability to persist, we do promote cooperation in the region and help our neighbors to stabilize and cooperate towards this end,” Khoshroo added.
