Universities in Iran's Kurdistan to Offer Kurdish Literature Majors

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian President Hassan Rouhani announced that students in universities of Kurdistan province, west of Iran, can henceforth choose Kurdish Literature as their major.

From now on, Kurdish Language and Literature will be taught in universities of Kurdistan province, Rouhani said in a meeting held on Sunday as part of his visit to the province.

He also announced that the Kurdish service of the state-run Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) will start its operation.

Rouhani referred to these measures as part of his administration's efforts to involve Kurds in the country's power structure, but at the same time admitted that further moves are needed.

As stated in the country's Constitution, every person should be treated equally, and all religious and ethnic minorities should be treated justly in terms of their legal and civil rights, he added.

Iran has a population of roughly five million Kurds, with most of them living in the four western provinces of Kurdistan, West Azarbaijan, Kermanshah and Ilam.
