Iranian MP Urges France to Block MKO Activities

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The chairman of the Iranian Parliament's National Security and Foreign Policy Commission called on the French government to list the anti-Iran Mojahedin-e Khalq Organization (MKO) as a terror group and prevent its activities in the European country.

"The MKO terrorist group, whose hands are stained with the blood of thousands of Iranian citizens, has been dropped from (the European Union's) terrorist organizations list and is freely operating in Europe," Alaeddin Boroujerdi lamented in a Wednesday meeting in Tehran with the head of the French parliament's Foreign Affairs Committee, Elisabeth Guigou.

It is expected from France to return to its previous policy, blacklist the anti-Iran terror group, and end its activities in the Western European country, the Iranian MP said.

The MKO - listed as a terrorist organization by much of the international community - fled Iran in 1986 for Iraq and was given a camp by former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein.

They fought on the side of Saddam during the Iraqi imposed war on Iran (1980-88). They were also involved in the bloody repression of Shiite Muslims in southern Iraq in 1991 and the massacre of Iraqi Kurds.

More than 17,000 Iranians, many of them civilians, have been killed at the hands of the MKO in different acts of terrorism including bombings in public places, and targeted killings.

Elsewhere in his remarks at the meeting, Boroujerdi stressed the need for more efforts at the international level to fight terrorism in the Middle East region and said the activities of terror groups in countries like Iraq and Syria pose a huge threat to global peace and security.

The French parliamentarian, for her part, described Iran as a stable country in the region, and stressed the need for the two countries to develop bilateral ties in various fields.
