Iranian Envoy Highlights Syria’s Status in Axis of Resistance
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The Iranian ambassador to Syria reiterated Tehran’s full support for Damascus in the fight against foreign-backed terrorists, describing the Arab country as a “pillar of the Axis of Resistance” against the Zionist regime of Israel.
“Anyone who defends Syria is in fact defending Palestine and one who fights against Syria is actually fighting against Palestine,” Mohammad Reza Raouf Sheibani told the Arabic-language Al-Ahed news website.
“Resistance is the only way to counter the Zionist plots and conspiracies,” he further stated.
“Today, we are witnessing heavy attacks against Syria” the Iranian diplomat said, adding that the Arab country is “a pillar of the Axis of Resistance”.
Syria has been gripped with civil war since March 2011 with Takfiri terrorists from various groups, including the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), currently controlling parts of it.
According to the United Nations, more than 220,000 people have been killed and one million wounded during the conflict.
In the meantime, Iran has remained a close ally of Syria and supports its legitimate government in the face of foreign-backed militancy.
Tehran insists that the Syrian nation is the only side that has the right to shape the future of its own country, rejecting foreign intervention with the use of force.
