Diplomat: West Raised Doubts over Iran’s N. Program to Justify Sanctions

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – A senior Iranian diplomat, who was involved in the nuclear negotiations between Tehran and six world powers, said the West raised claims against Iran’s peaceful nuclear energy program to justify imposing sanctions on the Islamic Republic.

Speaking to reporters in a press conference in Tehran on Sunday, Iranian Foreign Ministry’s Director General for the Political and International Affairs Hamid Baeidinejad hailed the nuclear agreement reached between Iran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany) after 22 months of talks as a “win-win” deal.

From the very beginning of the negotiations, the Iranian team emphasized that the country is seeking to preserve its nuclear rights and provide the grounds for its progress in nuclear technology.

“We have always underlined that Iran has no military purposes (in its nuclear program),” he said, adding that the claims about military diversion in Iran’s nuclear program were raised to justify the Western sanctions against the Islamic Republic.

Iran and the Group 5+1 (also known as P5+1 o E3+3) on July 14 reached a conclusion on a lasting nuclear agreement that would terminate all sanctions imposed on Tehran over its nuclear energy program after coming into force.
