Commander: Iran’s New Radars Detect Threats beyond Borders

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran’s Air Defense commander said two homegrown radar systems that came into service on Tuesday are capable of detecting aerial threats far away from the country’s borders.

Nazir and Bina radar systems were integrated into Iran’s air defense network on Tuesday morning.

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a ceremony to bring the advanced radars into operation, Air Defense Commander Brigadier General Farzad Esmaili hailed them as “unprecedented” systems which are difficult for the enemy to identify.

Thanks to the new radars, Iran’s Air Defense can detect threats far beyond the borders and take the necessary defensive action inside the country, the commander said.

Nazir and Bina work in wavebands that are impossible to eavesdrop, he added, saying the advanced systems can detect wide-body flying objects as well as stealth aircraft.

According to the general, the radars can also detect “semi-ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, wide-body planes and small flying objects.”

Nazir is a long-range radar with high resolution. As a suitable option against the anti-radiation missiles, Nazir is capable of detecting targets with pretty small cross-section areas in ranges of 800 kilometers and at 100,000-feet altitudes.

Bina, meanwhile, is a 3-dimensional radar that can identify radar-evading targets and be employed for electronic warfare.
